On National Coffee Day, we’d like to share a bit of our story—the journey that made Mississippi Mud Coffee what it is today.
From a Leap of Faith to Your Morning Cup
In 2004, our founder, Chris Ruess, took a risk that many wouldn’t. After spending his Sundays enjoying fresh, small-batch coffee with a friend, Chris couldn’t shake the desire to learn how to roast coffee himself. So, he left his job as an architect, cashed in his 401K, and bought his first roaster. Chris was determined to follow his passion for creating truly great coffee, even if it meant starting from scratch.
Two decades later, Mississippi Mud Coffee is proud to share the result of that leap of faith with people across the country.
Inspired by the Mighty Mississippi
While we aren’t literally on the banks of the Mississippi River, we take inspiration from it every day. St. Louis is our home—a city with a rich history deeply connected to the river—and it’s where we’ve been roasting small-batch coffee for 20 years. Our goal has always been to deliver fresh, flavorful coffee that brings a bit of that history and heart into every cup.

At Mississippi Mud, we air roast our beans in small batches, enhancing the depth and complexity of the flavors in every roast. Unlike traditional fire roasting, which can scorch the beans and leave a smoky taste, air roasting gives us better control over the temperature. The result? A cleaner, more consistent flavor in every batch. Whether you’re enjoying our signature Mississippi Mud Blend or the warm, spiced flavors of Highlander Grogg, you’ll taste the smoothness and clarity that air roasting brings, with no burnt edges or bitter aftertaste—just pure, balanced flavor in every sip.
