How much caffeine is in espresso beans?

Espresso beans contain roughly the same amount of caffeine as regular coffee beans, but the way they're brewed makes all the difference. A single espresso bean has about 6 mg of caffeine, while a full shot of espresso (about 1 ounce) typically contains 63 mg of caffeine.

Since espresso is brewed as a concentrated shot, it delivers a stronger caffeine kick per ounce compared to drip coffee. However, if you compare an entire 8-ounce cup of drip coffee, which can have 95–120 mg of caffeine, it often contains more total caffeine than a single shot of espresso.

The roast level also plays a role—contrary to popular belief, darker roasted espresso beans don’t have more caffeine than lighter roasts. In fact, lighter roasts retain slightly more caffeine because the roasting process breaks down caffeine molecules over time. But the difference is minor, and your espresso will still pack a punch regardless of roast level!

Are espresso beans the same as coffee beans?

Yes! Espresso beans are coffee beans. The term "espresso beans" simply refers to coffee beans that are roasted and blended in a way that makes them ideal for brewing espresso. Any coffee bean, whether it’s Arabica or Robusta, can technically be used to make espresso, but the best espresso beans are chosen and prepared to bring out the bold, rich flavors that work well with the high-pressure brewing method.
